Cesium MCP: drive a 3D globe in plain language

Lets agents drive a CesiumJS globe: camera flights, markers and GeoJSON layers, 3D Tiles and terrain, measuring, heatmaps and trajectories, with a local viewer.

Building a 3D GIS demo means a lot of repetitive camera moves, layer stacking and style tweaks. Cesium MCP turns the common CesiumJS operations into 60-odd tools, so “fly to the Eiffel Tower and drop a red marker” just happens on the globe. It’s an independent project by one developer, not a Cesium product, though the author contributed imagery and terrain servers and a unified gateway to CesiumGS’s earlier AI integration experiments.

What it does

  • Views: flyTo, setView and zoomToExtent, plus saved viewpoints and scene export.
  • Entities and layers: addMarker, addPolygon, addModel and addGeoJsonLayer, with field-based styling and basemap switching.
  • 3D data: load3dTiles, load3dGaussianSplat and loadTerrain, as well as CZML, KML and imagery services.
  • Analysis and animation: measure, addHeatmap, playTrajectory, camera orbits and clock control.
  • Load tools as needed: of 12 toolsets, 4 (30 tools) are on by default. Set CESIUM_TOOLSETS=all for everything, or let the agent switch toolsets on at runtime.

Who it’s for

  • GIS engineers putting together smart-city or digital-twin demos who want to build scenes by conversation.
  • Front-end developers with an existing Cesium app who want to add an AI assistant; the bridge package works with plain function calling.

Setup

Needs Node.js. The runtime package bundles the browser bridge and a local viewer at http://localhost:9100/, so most users need only this:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "cesium": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "cesium-mcp-runtime"]
    }
  }
}

To see it first, the README links a live demo that needs no install or sign-up.

Our take

What sets it apart is that it isn’t only an MCP server. One command layer serves MCP, WebMCP, function calling and an in-browser agent, so switching protocols doesn’t mean rewriting tools, and the project runs the official MCP conformance scenario. Version numbers track CesiumJS releases, so check the compatibility baseline before upgrading Cesium. Cesium ion terrain and imagery need your own token (setIonToken).
