gnucash-mcp: let an agent keep your local GnuCash books

Lets an agent read and write local GnuCash double-entry books: log transactions, invoice, reconcile, budget. Every write is logged and backed up first.

Anyone who keeps books in GnuCash knows the tiring part isn’t reading reports. It’s typing in every bank line and reconciling each month. gnucash-mcp lets an agent read and write your local .gnucash file, so “spent $45 at the grocery store yesterday” becomes a proper double-entry transaction in the right accounts. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. The project had about 80 stars as of 2026-10-06, so few people have found it yet.

What it does

  • The whole picture in one call: when the agent opens a book it gets an overview first: net-worth trend, monthly net, cash runway, budget pace, overdue invoices and unreconciled accounts.
  • Role-based tool sets: --modules picks core (accounts, transactions, balances, reconciliation, backups; always loaded), bookkeeper (reports, budgets, scheduled transactions), investor (cost basis and prices), or freelancer / business (customers, invoices, sales tax, vendors). Everything together is 80-plus tools.
  • Multi-currency invoicing: foreign-currency invoices with realized FX gains and losses booked as rates move.
  • Safety built in: every write lands in an audit log next to the book, the first write of each session triggers a verified backup, reconciled splits are protected by default, and “void” uses GnuCash’s real void instead of deleting.

Who it’s for

  • People who run personal finances in GnuCash and want to dictate entries and get help reconciling and budgeting.
  • Freelancers and small shop owners on GnuCash who want to issue invoices and chase receivables from a chat.
  • Anyone who wants their financial data to stay on their own machine.

Setup

Your book must be in GnuCash’s SQLite format (convert an XML book once with File → Save As). Claude Desktop users can double-click gnucash-mcp.mcpb from the latest release. For other clients, install the command:

git clone https://github.com/ninetails-io/gnucash-mcp.git
uv tool install -e ./gnucash-mcp

Then point your client’s command at the full path of ~/.local/bin/gnucash-mcp, with the argument --modules=all and GNUCASH_BOOK_PATH set to your book.

Our take

Most finance servers talk to a cloud service; this one keeps books locally, and the author clearly understands accounting. Reconciliation guards, void-not-delete and backup-before-write are things a generic CRUD wrapper never bothers with. The repo also ships three fictional sample books (a US freelancer, a Shenzhen cross-border seller, a German freelancer on the SKR03 chart), so you can try it without touching real money. Caveats: it’s a one-maintainer project, GnuCash holding the same book open causes file-lock errors, and it really does change your books. Even with backups, start on a copy. MIT-licensed.
