Notion MCP: search and edit your Notion workspace

Notion's official MCP. The hosted remote server is the recommended route: OAuth sign-in, semantic search, Markdown page edits and database queries.

Meeting notes, specs and task boards all live in Notion, and the agent can’t see any of it without copy and paste. Notion offers two official MCP routes: a remote server it hosts, with OAuth and permissions that follow your account, and this open-source server on GitHub that you run yourself. Notion now clearly recommends the remote one, and this repository is no longer actively maintained.

What it does

  • Search: the remote notion-search filters by keyword, location, creator and date; with Notion AI enabled, notion-ai-search also searches connected third-party apps semantically.
  • Read and write pages: notion-fetch reads pages, databases and views, while notion-create-pages and notion-update-page create and edit content in Markdown.
  • Database queries: notion-query-data-sources returns rows by view or filter.
  • Self-hosted version: the open-source server maps 22 tools directly onto the Notion API, connects with an internal integration token, and needs pages shared with the integration by hand.

Who it’s for

  • Teams running a wiki or projects in Notion who want Claude or Cursor to look things up and update task status.
  • Project managers turning meeting notes into Notion pages or rolling up progress from a database.

Setup

For the recommended remote server in Claude Code, add it and then run /mcp in a session to sign in:

claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp

If you really need it local, the open-source server takes an internal integration token:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "notionApi": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@notionhq/notion-mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "NOTION_TOKEN": "ntn_****"
      }
    }
  }
}

Our take

Several community Notion servers exist, but the official remote one is clearly ahead: no tokens or page sharing to manage, compact Markdown responses, and access that matches what you see in Notion. This entry links the open-source repo because it’s Notion’s official MCP home on GitHub, but read its banner: the local server isn’t actively supported, issues aren’t monitored, and it may be retired. Use it only when you must self-host and can’t use OAuth, and give its integration token read-only content access. Some remote search features need paid Notion AI. The open-source server is MIT-licensed and had about 4,700 stars as of 2026-10-06.
