Building an independent content site with a paywall forces two questions early: who owns the member data, and who takes the cut. Ghost is the open-source publishing platform maintained by the non-profit Ghost Foundation (TypeScript, MIT, about 55.5k stars as of 2026-10-15, with the README badge showing 100M+ downloads). Posts, newsletters, memberships and paywalls are one system rather than four plugins stitched together.

Core features

  • Publishing and subscriptions in one place: articles, pages and newsletters share one editor; memberships are native, with free, monthly and yearly tiers and paywalls toggled per post or per section.
  • An official CLI for self-hosting: after npm install ghost-cli -g, ghost install local gets a local instance running in about a minute; on a server, ghost install runs the full flow including automatic Let’s Encrypt certificates.
  • Hosted revenue funds the project: the official Ghost(Pro) page states plainly that 100% of revenue goes to the Ghost Foundation, financing maintenance and development — the README says so on its front page.
  • Digital Public Goods verified: the repo carries a Digital Public Goods (DPG) Verified badge, meaning it passed that registry’s compliance and technical review.
  • Headless usage: beyond its own themes, the Content API lets Ghost run as a backend only, with any frontend you choose; the README calls itself “the most popular open source, headless Node.js CMS.”

Typical use cases

  • A developer delivering a membership content site: tiers, paywalls and newsletters are native, so the work concentrates on the theme and migration instead of a subscription system from scratch.
  • A writer leaving platform algorithms and platform cuts behind: content and member data live on your own machine, and renewals, refunds and pricing are yours to set.
  • A writer who just wants a site: the hosted plan launches in about two minutes with CDN, backups and maintenance included; self-hosting trades that for full control.

Quick start

To try it locally:

npm install ghost-cli -g
ghost install local

Once the prompts finish, the local instance is ready to log into and publish. Production installs follow the official Ubuntu docs — ghost install handles SSL and systemd, and the database is MySQL 8 (local development defaults to SQLite).

Summary

For individuals and teams building membership content sites, and for developers delivering them. It is not the tool for complex commerce logic — carts, SKUs, inventory: Ghost’s business model is subscription content, not transactions. TypeScript, MIT, 55,541 stars as of 2026-10-15 with pushes the same day — development is active. Note that the project is sustained by both the foundation and its hosted plan, and the feature boundary between the self-hosted community edition and Ghost(Pro) is set by the official pricing page.

For a full transaction pipeline instead — carts, payment orchestration, orders — see Saleor; to validate a content idea first, a newsletter tool is the lighter lift.
