Apple tightens App Store age ratings: dating apps and AI companions forced to 18+
From Nov 16, App Store age questionnaires add dating and location fields; romance apps and AI companions get 18+ ratings, all apps due by Jan 12, 2027.

Apple announced on November 2, via its developer news site, that the App Store Connect age rating questionnaire gains two new content declarations on November 16: Shared Location and Dating and Relationships. Any app that declares dating or romance features — including “a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content,” Apple’s phrasing for the booming category of AI girlfriend and boyfriend chatbots — now carries a minimum 18+ rating, and every app already on the store must complete the declarations by January 12, 2027. Per The Verge, the change is Apple’s most direct move yet against AI companion apps slipping past age gates.
Key points
- Two new questionnaire fields go live on November 16. Shared Location asks whether an app shares real-world location with other people and does not raise the minimum rating in most regions; Dating and Relationships covers both real-people dating and virtual romance companions, and a declaration means 18+.
- Every app must answer by January 12, 2027. Declarations are required whenever you submit an update or change the questionnaire; missing the deadline blocks later submissions, per Apple’s announcement.
- Brazil rates these features under its own rules. Location sharing gets a minimum A16 and dating or romance content A18; exceptions such as parent-child location sharing can be rated directly by Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP).
The two new questions
Apple’s definitions are worth reading verbatim. Shared Location covers “sharing of real-world location with another person or group” — group chats and live location sharing included. The Dating and Relationships definition is the sharper one: “features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.” The second branch puts AI companion apps squarely inside the declaration obligation. General-purpose assistants like ChatGPT are not the target; the line falls on whether a product is deliberately built for romance.
The Verge notes the App Store’s existing 18+ rating mostly covered gambling, violence, drug and tobacco references, and nudity, and most dating apps were already rated as adult content. The increment here is the “virtual companion” clause: AI girlfriend and boyfriend simulators can no longer sit in lower tiers under a utilities or chat label.
How ratings change
Per Engadget’s reading, an app that declares Dating and Relationships and receives 18+ disappears from accounts of users under 18 where parents have set content restrictions, and in regions where minors can still see such listings, Apple requires proof of adulthood before download or purchase. That gate runs on the age-assurance stack Apple rolled out worldwide in February 2026: users in Australia, Brazil and Singapore must confirm they are adults before downloading 18+ apps, and the Declared Age Range API lets developers request an age bracket without touching a birth date (per TechCrunch’s February report).
Brazil is the only region the announcement singles out. Local rules map Shared Location to A16 and Dating and Relationships to A18, stricter than Apple’s treatment elsewhere. Developers who believe their app qualifies for a lower rating — location sharing designed specifically for parents and children, for example — can request an official rating directly from Brazil’s MJSP, and the Brazilian storefront then displays that rating.

Background and drivers
Set on that timeline, this is the third step of a two-year ratings effort: 2025 refined the tiers, February 2026 added the download-time age gate, and the questionnaire now catches up with what AI-era content looks like. Regulatory pressure is just as real. Texas’s age-assurance law was blocked by a court in December 2025, but child-safety rules keep advancing in Australia, the UK and Brazil, and platforms have to demonstrate that minors cannot reach adult content.
AI romance companions are the newest variable on that line. Three weeks ago Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with Disney bidding for its IP licensing (see our earlier report) — a category that turned romantic conversation into a business is now contracting, and a tighter age gate compresses the survivors further. The friction between minors and emotional AI has long outgrown industry self-policing; Denmark’s Supreme Court ruling in October on AI-generated child abuse imagery sits in the same regulatory climate.
Our take
If you ship an iOS app, check two things this week: whether any switch in your app shares a user’s location with other people, including temporary positioning inside group features, and whether a reviewer could read your conversation or character features as romantic. The first rarely moves your rating outside a few regions; the second, once judged romantic, means planning content and acquisition around an 18+ audience. Any update submitted after November 16 hits the new questionnaire, and answering it yourself on real functionality beats letting review decide for you.
Two honest caveats. The judgment call on “romantic content” sits with Apple review, and the announcement offers no pre-clearance or appeal channel — borderline cases only get resolved after the fact. And Shared Location leaves ratings untouched in most regions, so the real rating change here concentrates in dating and virtual companions; reading the announcement as an industry-wide 18+ mandate is a misreading. The next data point is what Apple discloses after the January 12, 2027 deadline — only then will anyone know how many apps this sweep actually caught.
