OpenAI launches Dots: always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra

OpenAI launched Dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computer and 4,000+ app integrations, rolling out to paid plans first.

An abstract pattern of colorful dots

OpenAI announced Dots at DevDay: persistent, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, each with their own cloud computer, learning from feedback over time and connected to 4,000+ apps through the plugin ecosystem. They’re reachable via ChatGPT, Slack and Teams (texting soon, voice on desktop and mobile), and roll out first to Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans in eligible markets, with enterprise “specialist dots” for accounting, email marketing and legal work previewed on stage.

The facts

  • The shape: every user starts with one Dot; Wired’s writeup of the demos includes a Dot noticing a user working through dinner and surfacing delivery options, and another co-building a website.
  • Permission design: proactive research is read-only; Custom Rules set boundaries; actions pass auto-review; sensitive actions (installing software, changing passwords) need explicit approval; monitoring can pause or stop a Dot at any time; Business/Enterprise/Edu content is not trained on by default.
  • Availability: OpenAI says “beginning to roll out,” not general availability — “eligible markets” is undefined. Wired reports day-one access for ChatGPT Pro subscribers and a $100/month figure that conflicts with The Verge’s report of a $200/month Pro tier; trust the official plan names.
  • Competitive position: aimed at Meta Muse, which is free and tops the US App Store — see Muse’s launch numbers and Instinct’s round for the field.

Our take

The interesting part isn’t “another assistant” — it’s how complete the permission architecture already is: read-only research, explicit approvals, pausable work, no training on business data. That design is a direct answer to two weeks of agent-boundary scandals, and it will be the template everyone else copies. The real verdict waits on usage: Muse traded price for scale, Dots is trading price for trust, and both routes now have flagship products.
