arXiv MCP Server: read papers by section and export citations

A local arXiv MCP server: agents search papers, read the authors' original LaTeX one section at a time, export BibTeX and set topic watches. Papers stay local.

The usual way to have an agent read a paper is to stuff the whole PDF into context, which garbles equations and eats the budget. arXiv MCP Server follows how researchers actually read: get the paper ID, look at the outline, read only the section you need, then export the citation. It reads the authors’ submitted LaTeX, so equations survive intact. It had about 3.2k stars as of 2026-10-06.

What it does

  • Finding papers: search_papers queries arXiv by keyword, category and date, and get_abstract fetches metadata and the abstract without downloading the paper.
  • Reading by section: get_paper_outline returns a numbered outline, read_paper_section reads one section, and get_paper_latex_section reads a section of the original LaTeX.
  • Citations and the literature graph: export_citations produces BibTeX from arXiv’s own metadata, and citation_graph pulls references and citing papers from Semantic Scholar; setting a free SEMANTIC_SCHOLAR_API_KEY avoids rate limits.
  • Topic watches: watch_topic saves a topic and check_alerts lists new papers since the last check; list_watches and unwatch_topic manage saved subscriptions.
  • Local semantic search: with the optional [pro] extra installed, semantic_search finds passages by meaning across already-downloaded papers, and reindex rebuilds the local index, with no extra API call.

Who it’s for

  • Grad students and researchers writing surveys or related-work sections who need the agent to check details section by section and produce BibTeX.
  • Engineers who want a weekly list of new papers in an arXiv area.

Setup

Needs uv. Add it for all projects in Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport stdio --scope user arxiv -- uvx arxiv-mcp-server

Papers are stored at ~/.arxiv-mcp-server/papers by default; --storage-path points to a different directory. To put the command on PATH instead of launching through uvx every time, run uv tool install arxiv-mcp-server first.

Our take

Most paper servers are thin search wrappers; this one is about reading. Outline-plus-section keeps each read under 12,000 characters by default, original LaTeX keeps equations and definitions exact, and BibTeX comes from authoritative metadata instead of the model’s memory. It exposes 19 tools in total, covering lookup, download, chunked reading, citations and watches, a wider surface than most comparable servers. The limits are plain too: it covers arXiv only, so journal papers and paywalled databases are out, the citation graph leans on Semantic Scholar, which can be flaky without a free API key, and local semantic search only reaches papers already downloaded, not the open web. An unrelated npm package shares the name, so install only with uvx. For plain web pages outside a specific paper, pair it with Fetch MCP Server. Licensed Apache-2.0.
