Search “in-depth posts on Rust async runtime trade-offs” with keywords and the first pages fill up with tutorials and Q&A threads. Exa reads a query by meaning and returns page content with the navigation and ads already stripped, not just links. Exa MCP is the official hosted server, so a client needs only a URL. It had about 5.1k stars as of 2026-10-06.

What it does

  • Search with content: the default web_search_exa searches any topic and returns usable content in the results.
  • Read given pages: web_fetch_exa turns one or more URLs into clean Markdown.
  • Advanced search: the optional web_search_advanced_exa adds domain and date filters, highlights, summaries and subpage crawling.
  • Bundled skills: installed as a Claude plugin or Agent Plugin, it ships search and exa-agent skills with ready-made orchestration for deep research and Exa Agent calls; connecting the bare MCP URL gets only the raw tools.
  • Multi-step research: the optional agent_run calls Exa Agent for research, list-building and structured output, and needs sign-in or an API key.

Who it’s for

  • Developers researching designs or tools who need the agent to find serious write-ups, not SEO farms.
  • Research and growth teams doing lead lists or competitor analysis who want structured results.

Setup

Nothing to install; the hosted endpoint is https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp. It’s an Agent Plugin, so Cursor, VS Code, Kiro, LM Studio and similar clients mostly offer a one-click install. In Codex:

codex mcp add exa --url https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp

Other clients use the standard config, and optional tools are enabled with a ?tools= parameter on the URL:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "exa": {
      "type": "streamable-http",
      "url": "https://mcp.exa.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Our take

Against Brave’s keyword index, Exa’s strength is finding content by meaning, and it folds search and page reading into one call, which saves a fetch round and context. The hosted server works anonymously, so trying it costs nothing, and appending ?login forces the sign-in flow when you want it. The trade-off is dependence on Exa’s cloud: anonymous use is rate-limited, higher limits and Exa Agent need sign-in or a paid API key, and your queries go to Exa. Exa recommends OAuth sign-in over putting a key in the URL. Licensed MIT.
