If you want to know what people really think of a product, Reddit is often blunter than any review site, but the threads are spread across a dozen subreddits and reading every comment takes forever. Reddit MCP Buddy sends the agent to do the reading: browse subreddits, search, pull whole comment threads, then summarize. It reads and never writes, and had about 850 stars as of 2026-10-06.
What it does
- Browse:
browse_subredditsorts any subreddit, includingallandpopular, by hot, new, top or rising. - Search:
search_redditsearches all of Reddit or specific subreddits, filtered by author, time or flair. - Threads:
get_post_detailstakes nearly any Reddit URL format (includingredd.itshort links) and returns the post with its comments, with control over sorting and depth. - Users:
user_analysisreturns a user’s karma, posts and most active subreddits;reddit_explaindecodes community terms such as AMA and ELI5.
Who it’s for
- Product and marketing people doing competitor or user research who want a quick read on how a category is discussed.
- Indie developers eyeing a new market who want to see what their target users complain about.
- Editors hunting for the most-discussed threads on a topic.
Setup
You need Node.js. In Claude Code it’s one command, and browsing works without any credentials:
claude mcp add --transport stdio reddit-mcp-buddy -s user -- npx -y reddit-mcp-buddy
For search, comments and full engagement data, create a “script” app at reddit.com/prefs/apps and set REDDIT_CLIENT_ID and REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET. That lifts the limit from 10 to 60 requests a minute, and adding a username and password takes it to 100. Claude Desktop users can also install the .mcpb extension.
Our take
There are plenty of Reddit servers; this one wins on restraint. It uses Reddit’s official API and public RSS instead of scraping pages, and it doesn’t invent sentiment scores. You get raw data and draw the conclusions with the model. Being read-only also means it can’t post or comment for you, which suits research. Caveats: without credentials the data comes from RSS, so scores and comment counts are null and search and threads need keys. The top tier puts your Reddit password in the config, so use a dedicated account. Reddit’s API terms apply, so read them before any commercial use. It’s an individual developer’s project, MIT-licensed.
