OpenAI revamps ChatGPT Pro tiers as a $500 Pro Max plan surfaces in code
OpenAI renamed its $100 and $200 Pro tiers and dropped the 5x/20x usage labels; code in openai/codex reveals an unpublished Pro Max tier leaked at $500 a month.
From September 27, users noticed OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page had changed: the $100 and $200 Pro tiers are now called Pro Standard and Pro More, and the “5x / 20x more usage than Plus” labels are gone, replaced by a vague “more usage than Plus.” Meanwhile, a PR merged into the openai/codex repository on September 25 shows an unpublished Pro Max plan, with leaked in-app copy pricing it at $500 a month.

Our take
Replacing “N times the usage” with “more usage” turns a promise into an elastic one — the ceiling heavy users cared about is no longer comparable. If your team built cost models around the Pro tier’s 20x allowance, recalibrate against measured consumption now rather than waiting for an announcement. A $500 Pro Max could be good news for teams hammering Codex: an extra rung suggests the $200 tier finally has a pressure valve. Treat every number here as a placeholder until OpenAI says otherwise.
