postmarketOS rebrands as Nura

postmarketOS, the project that has spent nearly a decade keeping old phones running Linux, announced on September 27 at its community conference that it is renaming itself Nura. Per the official blog, the name was chosen by the community from over 300 proposals and refers to the Nuraghe, ancient Sardinian stone towers that have stood for thousands of years — a nod to the project’s aim of keeping devices usable long-term.

The facts

Name and domain: Nura launches on nura.eco (nura.org was taken and a broker’s offer was rejected; the team picked .eco for its anti-greenwashing policies). A trademark has been filed.
The process: 300-plus community suggestions, a four-name shortlist, then range voting on a -2 to +2 scale; Nura won with the highest mean score.
The reasons: the project lists three problems with the old name — it is long and hard to pronounce, its capitalization is inconsistent (postmarketOS/postmarketOs/pmOS), and a descriptive name limits the project’s scope and cannot be trademarked.
What stays: the logo largely survives (rebuilt as a mathematical construction so anyone can reproduce it), the mission is unchanged, and user-facing strings will migrate gradually — repositories and docs will take longer.

Our take

Running a full naming process — community proposals, a trademark filing, a domain migration — is what projects do when they plan to outgrow their original description. “Phone-porting distro” no longer covers the ambition. The practical impact on users is small for now: images, docs and repo names will switch in phases.
